I love watching “get ready with me” videos.
And one of my favorite parts is always at the end when someone starts layering different perfumes. They’ll spray one fragrance, add another, maybe use a scented lotion first, and somehow create this completely unique scent.
And every time, I would think:
I wish I was put together enough to do that.
Then one day it hit me.
I already do.
I just wasn't calling it fragrance layering.
I don't use a different soap every single day. I usually pick one and use it for a few weeks. Then I have lotions, scrubs and body oils that I love—and they don't necessarily have the exact same scent.
So without really thinking about it, I was already layering fragrance every time I got ready.
And now that I've added solid perfumes to LemonMoon with the Midnight Velvet Collection, I've been having even MORE fun figuring out which scents work together.
What Is Scent Layering?
Scent layering is exactly what it sounds like: using more than one scented product to create your own fragrance combination.
And here's the part I really want you to know:
They do not have to match.
You don't need an orange soap, orange scrub, orange lotion and orange perfume.
In fact, I think it's much more fun when they don't match.
Your soap might add something fresh. Your lotion might bring in a little sweetness. Your body oil might add warmth. Then your solid perfume can add something deeper and moodier.
Each product becomes one little piece of the finished scent.
Start With the Products You're Already Using
You don't have to go out and buy five new products to start layering fragrance.
Start with your normal routine.
Think:
Soap → Scrub → Lotion or Body Oil → Solid Perfume
You also don't have to use every step every time.
Maybe it's just your soap + lotion.
Maybe it's a scrub + lotion + perfume.
Maybe you shower with one scent, moisturize with something completely different and finish with a solid perfume.
There really aren't rules here.
The goal is to find combinations that smell good to YOU.
And fall might be my favorite season to experiment with it.
You can mix warm scents with something sweet. Add a little citrus to something dark and moody. Combine creamy scents with deeper fragrances.
Here are a few LemonMoon combinations to get you started.
🖤 Dark + Cozy
Orange Coconut Milk Soap
Bronze Dry Body Oil
Dark Velvet Solid Perfume
I love this combination because it has so many different layers.
Orange Coconut Milk starts everything off bright and creamy. Bronze adds warmth, and then Dark Velvet completely changes the mood with something deeper and darker.
Nothing technically “matches.”
And that's exactly why it works.
This is the kind of combination I would reach for on a cold fall day when I want something warm and cozy without smelling overly sweet.
🥀 Romantic + Soft
Cherry Almond Soap
Cherry Almond Lotion
Velvet Nectar Solid Perfume
If you love softer, sweeter fragrances, start here.
Cherry Almond gives you that familiar sweet base, and then Velvet Nectar adds another romantic layer.
It's feminine, warm and a little dreamy without needing every single product to be the same fragrance.
This is such a pretty fall combination if the really dark and moody scents aren't usually your thing.
🌙 Warm + Mysterious
Oatmeal Milk & Honey Soap
Sandalwood Vanilla Lotion
Evening Eclipse Solid Perfume
This one feels like fall at night.
Oatmeal Milk & Honey gives you a soft, comforting base. Sandalwood Vanilla adds warmth, and Evening Eclipse brings in that little bit of mystery.
It's cozy without being too sweet and warm without feeling heavy.
Basically: put on your pajamas, light a candle and pick up your book.
🍊 Bright + Moody
Orange Coconut Milk Soap
Orange Lotion
Dark Velvet Solid Perfume
This is exactly why I don't think fragrance layering needs to follow rules.
Orange and Dark Velvet might not be the first combination you'd think of.
But that bright citrus underneath a deeper, moodier fragrance creates something completely different than either scent on its own.
And that's the fun part.
You're not trying to make every product smell identical.
You're creating your own scent.
How to Find Your Own Scent Combination
If you're staring at your LemonMoon collection wondering what on earth to put together, don't overthink it.
Start with one product you already love.
Maybe you always reach for Cherry Almond Lotion.
Maybe Orange Coconut Milk is your favorite soap.
Maybe you've fallen in love with Dark Velvet.
Start there.
Then think about what you want to add to it.
Want it warmer?
Try adding sandalwood vanilla or another cozy scent.
Want it brighter?
Bring in citrus.
Want it sweeter?
Try Cherry Almond or something soft and creamy.
Want it moodier?
Finish with one of the Midnight Velvet solid perfumes.
And then experiment.
Some combinations will surprise you.
Your Soap Doesn't Have to Match Your Lotion
I think this is probably the biggest thing I want people to take away from this.
When you're shopping for bath and body products, it's easy to feel like you need to buy the matching set.
If you buy one scent of soap, you need the same lotion.
If you buy a scrub, you need the matching body product.
You don't.
Sometimes I intentionally don't make every LemonMoon product in every fragrance—and that's okay.
Your bathroom doesn't need to look like a perfectly coordinated fragrance department.
Pick the products you actually love.
Then use them together.
You might end up creating something that smells even better than a perfectly matching set.
Make Your Fragrance Feel Like You
This is what I've come to love most about scent layering.
Someone else might have the exact same Dark Velvet Solid Perfume that you do.
But maybe they're pairing theirs with Sandalwood Vanilla while you're layering yours over Orange Coconut Milk and Bronze.
Suddenly, you're wearing two completely different scents.
And there's something really fun about that.
Fragrance doesn't have to be complicated. You don't need an enormous perfume collection or a perfectly coordinated routine.
Sometimes it's just your favorite soap.
The lotion you reach for every day.
A body oil you love.
And a swipe of solid perfume before you walk out the door.
Layer them. Mix them. Find the combination that feels like you.
And this fall, don't worry about whether your scents “match.”
That's kind of the whole point.
