Over the last couple years, we’ve been making small changes in our home to use cleaner products and eat a little cleaner.
Nothing extreme. Nothing all at once.
It started with food—just trying to limit dyes for our kids. Then it turned into making my own laundry detergent and dishwasher detergent (shoutout to PureHaven 🙌).
And now… we’ve kind of found ourselves focusing on plastic.
Not in an all-or-nothing way. Just in a “let’s do better when we can” kind of way.
Because if you’ve ever watched Plastic Detox, you know how overwhelming it can feel. It makes you want to throw everything out and start from scratch.
But that’s not real life.
So instead, we’re just replacing things as we go.
When something needs to be replaced, we choose a better option.
That’s been our approach.
So far, that’s looked like:
- Switching our plastic dish brush for a bamboo one
- Switching all of our utensils to metal or bamboo
- Swapping out my synthetic makeup eraser cloth for crocheted cotton rounds and washcloths
And honestly—one of the easiest changes has been switching to handmade soap.
No plastic bottles. No extra waste. Just a simple swap that makes a difference.
It’s also what’s pushed me to start working on more low-waste products for Lemonmoon—like solid dish soap and shampoo bars.
What I’m Doing at Lemonmoon
As I’ve been making these changes at home, I’ve also been thinking a lot about how I can do better with Lemonmoon too.
Here are a few things that matter to me:
Better ingredients
All products are scented with 100% therapeutic-grade essential oils or phthalate-free fragrance oils.
Why phthalate-free?
Phthalates are often used in fragrances to help the scent last longer, but they’ve been linked to hormone disruption and other health concerns. It’s not something I’m comfortable using, so I don’t.
Packaging that’s a little better
The shrink wrap I use on soaps and bath bombs is biodegradable.
Is it perfect? No.
Is it better? Yes.
And that’s kind of the whole goal.
This Isn’t About Doing It Perfectly
We’re not a zero-waste family.
We’re not throwing everything out and starting over.
We’re just making better choices when we can, little by little.
And that adds up.
I’ll keep working toward using less plastic—both at home and with Lemonmoon.
But I’d love to hear from you too—
Have you made any swaps?
What are your favorite non-plastic alternatives?
I’m always looking for new ideas 🤍
